A McKenney and Hall portrait print of Native American Not-Chi-Mi-Ne, an Ioway Chief. Polychrome print with some hand colored elements. Brightly colored print features Not-Chi-Mi-Ne Ioway Chief in traditional dress with a presidential medal on his neck, shown in brilliant, vivid colors of red, yellow, and green in this later edition print. Presented in a black painted wood frame.
Thomas Loraine McKenney (1785-1859) served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1824-1830, and commissioned portraits of Native American chiefs for his gallery in the War Department. He was intent on publishing and recording the history of vanishing North American Indians. James Hall (1793-1868) provided text for Native History of the Indian Tribes of North America, published in three volumes between 1838 and 1844.
