Collection of "Ape" Bookplates from 19th-Century Vanity Fair Magazines

An assortment of unframed lithographic bookplates of caricatures of various political and religious figures from late 19th-century Vanity Fair magazine by Carlo Pellegrini (1839-1889). Each image includes artist’s signature signed in plate to the lower right. Pellegrini worked for Vanity Fair became its first caricaturist, signing his pieces with the pseudonym ‘Ape.’ The cartoons provide a fascinating pictorial history of the latter half of the 19th century, and with great charm. Vanity Fair, at the time these prints were made, was published each week, from 1869 to 1914. The highlight of each week was a full-page color lithograph caricature of a well-known personage and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today.
Condition
- condition consistent with age. Discoloration across prints, increasing to outer edges. Edges are worn, with some perforation on one side as the prints have been removed from the binding of the magazine.
