Peter Max Signed Mixed Media Print with Acrylic "Katrina Relief"
Item Details
An original mixed media offset lithograph with hand-painted acrylic details on paper by well-listed and renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (1937 -), titled Katrina Relief. Max received his formal art education in the 1950s at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan, where he studied anatomy, figure drawing and composition under the tutelage of Frank J. Reilly. Max began his career in illustration and graphic arts by creating collage-based works using elements taken from antique photographs. His interest in astronomy led to his self-described “Cosmic ’60s” period, where his art became a symbol of the counter-culture with its flamboyant use of bright rainbow colors and psychedelic images. Max works in multiple forms of media including painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, sculpture, video and digital imagery. American icons such as Bill Clinton, Taylor Swift, and Mohammed Ali appear in his works, along with other elements such as the Statue Of Liberty, peace signs, butterflies, and flying saucers. The work presented here depicts a printed image of the United States Capitol, surrounded by a solid hand-painted cerulean blue field with a small atlas representation of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama and a charming rendition of the American flag. Above the Capitol, an enormous heart levitates amongst three Southern flowers embellished with vivid color and energetic mark-making. The piece is executed in Max’s signature color spectrum, his hand-signed signature camouflaged as one of the marks that accent the work to the lower right. Presented behind white linen liner with interior gold tone trim, under acrylic glass in a beveled composite frame with a distressed gold tone finish. A hanging wire is attached to the verso.
