Antique Hand-Knotted Caucasian Rug Circa 1890

Item Details

An antique hand-knotted Caucasian rug circa 1890; likely a Yoruk prayer mat, although not confirmed. The rug features a central eagle-style hooked pendant gul, surrounded by a field of deep ruby red with serrated sickle leaves and flower blossom patterns in ivory, garnet red, deep indigo and pale blue, with burnt orange and black. The field has a crenellated edge, flanked by deep guard borders with small ivory accent. It has a rectilinear carnation border in complementary colors and a natural warp fringe to either end. Unmarked.

Condition

- worn, ends and sides fraying.
