Budai Statues and Lamp
Item Details
A group of Budai statues and an Ebisu lamp. The two statues include a red chalkware Budai figurine by Alexander Backer Co. and an unmarked gold seated Budai figurine. Budai 布袋 (Hotei in Japanese), is a folkloric deity of happiness and contentment who is also known as the Laughing Buddha. He is depicted smiling, with a rotund belly, and fat earlobes. The two statues show Budai holding his cloth bag that he uses to feed the poor and needy in his left hand. In his right hand he holds a Buddhist prayer beads. The lamp has a wooden base, a brass toned metal lamp stand, a pleated white shade, and features a white-glazed ceramic figure of Ebisu holding a fish. Ebisu (恵比須) is a Japanese folkloric deity of fishermen and luck. Both he and Budai are a part of the Japanese Seven Gods of Fortune (七福神 Shichifukujin).
