A cast bronze sculpture by Milton Hebald depicting David and Goliath. Rendered without refined details, this sculpture depicts Goliath on the ground with his head turned to the left revealing stone embedded in his forehead. His right arm, bearing a shield, is raised defensively. David is positioned with his left foot pressed against the giant’s chest with both arms are raised over his head, the left bearing a sling. This sculpture was commissioned in limited numbers by the Jewish Reform Appeal as presentation pieces. Executed by Milton Hebald 1968-1969, his signature can be found on the back of the shield. This piece is mounted on a marble base.
Milton Hebald (1917-2015) was a sculptor who specialized in figurative bronze works. Twenty-three of his works are displayed in public in New York City, including two in Central Park and one at JFK airport. Mr. Hebald studied at the Arts Students League, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and the National Academy of Design, and taught at the Cooper Union and the Brooklyn Museum of Art before winning the 1955 Rome Prize fellowship from the American Academy in Rome, where he lived for 50 years before returning to New York. Two of his pieces are in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
