An offset lithographic poster from Clos du Val Wine Company, Napa Valley, California, 1981, featuring the art from the original watercolor sketch by Robert Searle, Blessing the Grapes, California Style. The image depicts religious leaders of various faiths all dancing on barrels of grapes, with the title of the work and ‘Clos du Val Wine Co., Napa Valley, California, 94508.’ at the bottom. The words ‘Bless You’ are in a banner drawn across the top of the poster. Signed in-plate to the lower left. Searle (British, 1920 – 2011) is known worldwide for his unique style of satirical cartooning. He was a British war veteran, having survived the Siam-Burma Death Railway. After being liberated, he was a courtroom cartoonist at the Nuremberg Trials. He was later made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, received the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur, and later received the German Order of Merit. His work is on permanent display at the Imperial War Museum in London. The poster is presented in a simple black frame and is ready to hang. Also included are a pair of Italian poster prints for a tavern, ‘Bar Sport’, depicting the casual sidewalk café of an Italian eatery. Presented in matching black frames and ready to hang.
