Paul Chidlaw Original Graphite Drawing

Item Details

An original mid-20th century graphite drawing on paper by well-listed American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900-1989). The drawing is made of four distinct squares filled with layers of patterned textures and shapes. The drawing is signed in gray pastel to the lower right. It is matted in black and presented behind glass in a beveled wooden frame with glossy black acrylic finish. A hanging wire is attached to the verso. Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
