Original Hilde Kayn Oil on Academy Board Painting
Item Details
An original oil on masonite painting by listed Ohioan artist Hilde Kayn (1903 – 1950). The painting is entitled ‘Jubilant,’ and was featured in The Whitney Museum of Americana’s Annual Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting from November 13- December 12 in 1944, as is signified by the museum tag to the verso. The artist has painted an incredible image of figures reveling in the excitement of the nighttime air, both ascending and descending the stairs of a party. They would seem riled into a frenzy by a flash of light erupting above their heads, or perhaps by something else we can’t see. Whatever is happening there is something magical afoot. The quality of the paint is very flattened, and interestingly so because the style of rendering lends itself to traditions of impressionism. One might also notice a blending of romantic and modern style convivially meeting under the auspices of all that was culturally afoot in 1940s America. This incredibly spirited painting is immaculately presented in a wooden frame with ornamental embellishments throughout. The frame is gessoed with gold underpainting, that shows through on the raised portions of the frame.
Condition
Good-Fair, Painting and frame show wear consistent with age. The frame exhibits some surface cracking.
