An original, vintage Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist’s dummy. Charlie McCarthy was a character invention operated by Edgar Bergen (1903 – 1978), a beloved American actor, comedian and radio performer popular on the NBC Chase and Sanborn Radio Hour radio variety show between 1937 and 1949. In 1949 Bergen took his variety act to CBS and the Charlie McCarthy Show, which ran until 1956. Bergen and ‘Charlie’ appeared in feature films, on television and made personal appearances world-wide. This ventriloquist’s dummy is a copy of the original used by McCarthy. It has a thin plastic ‘skin’ with moulded and painted composition hair and facial features. Features are painted; eyes are fixed and do not close or move. Mouth operates with string. Monocle , hat, and lapel flower included; hands and feet are moulded. Clothing is sewn and it has a cloth body. Marked ‘K & S’ to back of neck.
Condition
- to fair, with considerable wear to the back of the head, cracking overall on the head with a small piece missing. CLothing is in reasonably good shape for age with some wear. Monocle and hat are included and in good condition.
