19th Century Bronze Thai Mythological Bird

An antique gilded bronze Thai temple decoration of the graceful mythological bird ‘Humsa’ (wild goose) from a ‘San Hong’. This beautiful sculpture is from the Ayutthaya period, 19th century. The sculpture sits upon a gilded wood base and then is attached to another small wood pedestal (8.5’).
The Humsa is a bird of infinite grace, and the Thai saying: ‘Ngaam onchoy tiap dang humsa’ — which translates to ‘as beautiful and graceful as a Humsa’. The head and neck of a Humsa can be seen on the prow of the magnificent royal barge the Suphannahong. The Humsa is also an auspicious animal, portending of miracles. Nothing can match the grace of the Humsa, for this great swan-like bird has a poise and delicacy beyond compare and its name is used in a modern Thai expression denoting unsurpassed beauty and grace.
