Original Martin Lewis Etching
Item Details
An original etching by well listed Australian born artist Martin Lewis (1881 – 1962). Born in Castlemaine, Australia, Martin Lewis became in the 1920s and 1930s one of the major print makers in the United States, completing, between 1915 and 1945, about 143 prints. On canvas, he also explored human activity and relationships, but his graphics are regarded superior to his paintings. He lived in New York City most of his life, with the exception of several years during the Depression when he moved to Connecticut. But in 1933, missing the city, he returned to New York. This incredibly prolific printmaker was mostly self taught, and amazingly so, because the quality of his etchings is incredibly impressive. This etching would appear to be rendered in dry point, given the tell tale sensual black line, more velvety than a typical hard ground etching. The artist has portrayed a presumably Asian family walking through the rain with some shelter provided by their umbrellas . The print is presented in a wooden frame with golden paint, and a border pink mat to edge.
