An original oil on canvas portrait by Marjorie Conant Bush-Brown (1885-1978). Bush-Brown was an American painter and portrait artist working for over 60 years. Bush-Brown began painting at the age of 16 and studied for six years at the Boston Museum Art School under Frank Benson, Edward Tarbell and Philip Hass. She later studied for two years in Paris under Cottet and Lucien-Simon. During her lifetime, Bush-Brown was well regarded and exhibited in the High Museum in Atlanta, as well as the Art Institute of Pittsburg, Corcoran Biennale, and Carnegie International. Bush-Brown was know for her emotive backgrounds, exacting skin tones, and ‘Negro studies’.
This painting is signed in black oil paint on the lower right of the piece and is framed in a wood stained in a dark tone and also painted in a metallic color along the edges. The back is wired for hanging.
