The piece was on loan in 1996 to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston as a part of the Rio Grande exhibition in the American Decorative Arts department. Helen Hardin (1943-1984) was an American artist born to a Santa Clara Pueblo artist mother who inspired her to pursue art as a spiritual connection to her Native American lineage. Her work often involves abstraction of natural forms such as the profile of the eagle in this piece, which also draws inspiration for Cubism. Her work is featured also in the Hear Museum in Phoenix, the Museum of New Mexico, and the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles. Hardin was also selected to be featured in a PBS documentary series about Native American artists in 1976.
