The books are War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy (1938), Frankenstein (or the Modern Prometheus) by Mary Shelley (1934), The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas (1950), The Turning of the Screw by Henry James (1949), and The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann (1962). The Magic Mountain is illustrated with wood engravings by Felix Hoffmann.
