Betjemann's Tantalus Decanter

Item Details

A Betjemann’s Tantalus Decanter. A Tantalus is a locking wood cabinet holding two or more decanters. The Tantalus was patented by George Betjemann in 1881 whose family were esteemed cabinet makers in London. The purpose of the lock was to stop an unauthorized person from opening the decanters, while allowing the decanters to be displayed. The blown glass decanters feature a cut pattern on the bottom. The stoppers are cut as well and made entirely of glass. The locking mechanism is intact and includes the key. The top handle is marked Betjemann’s Patent 54755 London. The set would benefit from a thorough cleaning.
