A carved wood canoe prow from New Guinea. This artifact from the 1920s was hand carved from a solid piece of wood and was the front adornment for a tribal canoe. The people of New Guinea utilize canoes as a primary means of transportation and for fishing the rivers. They carved canoes out of whole logs and adorned them with clan symbols and emblems of speed and success.
