Handmade "Death of Russia" War Rug From Afghanistan

A handmade ‘Death of Russia’ war rug from Afghanistan. War rugs were initially created after the Soviet invasion and occupation of Afghanistan started in 1979. The rugs depict the experiences of the tribal Afghani weavers and ranged from highly stylized references to weapons of war to more explicit portrayals of machinery, artillery, and combat. This particular rug features a bold design of machine guns, tanks and grenades on a red field with the text ‘Death to Russia’ in black. The rug has a warhead border in multi colors, gray warp and fringe on each end, and is marked on the back.
