Malian Carved Granary Door

An exquisite hand carved granary door from the Dogon people of Mali, Africa. This 20th century stained black wooden door is was originally part of a family granary, existing in the courtyard of a joint residence of a single extended bloodline, which oftentimes accounted for a significant portion of the village population. This door is intricately carved with Dogon symbolism pertaining to the tribe’s origin story, family ancestry, agricultural and hunting scenes, and figures of various animals. It is fitted with a large figural handle and sliding bolt. This door is displayed erect on a square marble base with metal support arms.
