An antique collection of the series entitled The World’s Greatest Books includes seven volumes published by the S.S. McClure Company, 1910, by the joint editors Lord Northcliffe and S.S. McClure. Volumes 3 and 7 are entitled Fiction and include works by Dickens, Defoe, Pushkin, and Scott among others. Volume 10 is Lives and Letters with a tissue guarded frontispiece of Count Lyof N. Tolstoy. Other volumes are entitled Modern History, Religion & Philosophy, Philosophy & Economics, and Miscellaneous Literature and Index. Each volume is bound in red cloth covered with gilt lettering on the spine. The front covers are blind stamped. Each volume has a tissue guarded frontispiece.
Condition
Shelf wear is consistent with age and usage. Foxing, fading, and wear to the covers is evident. Several have previous owner’s name written on the front endpaper. Several have water markings. One has a cracked back hinge. The text blocks are clean, and the bindings are tight.
