A Dayton Computing scale. This antique early commercial calculating scale features brass scales with a four part measuring system, a marble tare and cast iron base. Scale has raised floral accents and is marked on the front and back, ‘The Computing Scale Co.-Dayton, Ohio, USA’. The computing scale was patented in 1885 by Julius Pitrat and was bought six years later by Edward Canby and Orange Ozias of Dayton, Ohio and became the first vendors of computing scales. in 1911 the computing scale company merged with the International Time Recording and Tabulation Machine Company to form the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company, later re-named IBM in 1924.
