Antique German Krampus Doll Circa 1910
Item Details
A fantastic and rare antique German Krampus doll, circa 1910. The figure features a painted red face bearing horns, teeth, and pointed ears. The body appears to be made of a paper-mache and is covered in black faux fur to body with orange fur to hands and feet. Doll is wearing a red flannel cape with hood and holding a bunch of gold-painted birch sticks in its right hand with two metal link chains in the left hand (bells are missing). German legend has it that Krampus was created as a counterpart to St. Nicholas and would come bearing chains with bells and a bundle of birch sticks to swat naughty children into being nice.
