Joseph Farquharson Original Oil Painting "The Angelus"

Item Details

An early 20th-century original oil on canvas painting by very well-listed plein air painter Joseph Farquharson (United Kingdom/Scotland, 1846 – 1935), titled, The Angelus. The image depicts a large family of field workers standing in a desolate field, heads bowed, saying together a prayer called the Angelus, the prayer of the devotee. The painting is signed in paint by the artist to the lower right, and mounted in a stunning beveled wood frame with ornate cast gesso applique and gilt finish.
The imagery of this painting is directly influenced by the oil painting by French painter Jean-François Millet (1814 – 1875), completed in 1859, also titled The Angelus, depicting two peasants bowing their heads in a field over a basket of potatoes to say the Angelus, that together with the ringing of the bell from the church on the horizon marks the end of a day’s work. The painting is famous today for driving the prices for artworks of the Barbizon school up to record amounts in the late 19th century.
Farquharson was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Scotland in 1900, Royal Academician in 1915 and Senior Royal Academician in 1922. In addition to exhibiting over 200 works at the Royal Academy, he showed 73 at the Royal Society of Arts and 181 at the Fine Art Society. He also exhibited at the Royal College of Art and the Tate Gallery. The renowned artist-critic, Sickert, made Farquharson the subject of an essay comparing him favorably with French master painter, Gustave Courbet.
