Reproduction Print on Canvas of Velazquez's Baroque "Las Meninas"

Item Details

A reproduction print on canvas of Las Meninas (The Maids of Honor) (1656) from an original painting by 17th century painter Diego Velázquez (Spanish, baptism 1599 – 1660), who is considered a master of the Spanish Golden Age of painting. He was one of the leading painters in the court of King Philip IV and was most noted for his Baroque portraiture. The subject of the original painting is Queen Mariana’s eldest daughter, Margaret Theresa, with her Ladies in Waiting. Each is dressed very formally in court clothing and they dote on the little Princess. Touches of red flowers adorning hair, wrists and breasts give life to the scene, while a faded reflection of the King and Queen, watching from the viewer’s perspective and reflected in a mirror to the far background may be a harbinger of the soon-to-follow demise of the King’s reign. The painter has included himself in the scene and the original painting is considered to be Velasquez’s finest masterpiece, painted just a few years before his death. The image is printed on canvas to new stretchers, unframed, and is ready to hang.
