Louis Spiegel Original Clown Portrait Oil Painting
Item Details
An original portrait oil painting of a clown by Louis Spiegel (1901-1975). Although a painter of still life, portrait and landscapes, this Cincinnati artist is best known for his portraits of clowns. He is attributed as saying ‘I don’t just paint the clown, I paint the soul.’ An article in the Enquirer quoted Spiegel as saying ‘Sometimes I wonder, who’s the clown, him or me? I think what I love about this fellow is that he knows himself for what he is.’ This oil on board painting depicts a clown with a slightly melancholy expression. It is signed L. Spiegel on lower right, and mounted in a gold tone wood frame with black interior edge.
