Giuseppe "Professor" Bessi Bust of Augustus Caesar

A bust of Augustus Caesar by Guiseppe ‘Professor’ Bessie (19th c., Italian) on a marble plinth. Bessi was one of the most prominent figures of Salon sculpting, pioneering a stylized mixture of Art Nouveau and Neo-Classicism. He was a professor at the Art Academy of Volterra and was a prominent sculptor in alabaster, onyx, marble, and bronze. His works are today featured internationally in museum exhibits. This bust features the young Caesar clad in an ornate breastplate depicting a chariot race. Inscribed ‘Prof G. Bessi’ on the base of the bust.
