Roland Huston Oil Portrait of Woman in Blue Jumper
Item Details
An original oil on canvas painting by well-regarded Cincinnati painter Roland Huston (1936-2005). The image depicts a stunning portrait of a woman wearing a blue jumper with a white blouse underneath, clasped at the collar by a gold brooch, seated at a table, cradling the side of her face with her hand as she gazes introspectively at something beyond the pictorial space. A muted beige wall fills the void behind her. The beautifully simplified features of her face and surroundings are reminiscent of the Bay Area Figurative Movement of the 1950s. The artist thoughtfully combines colors and patterns to create an evocative, fascinating image. The painting is not signed but comes directly from the artist’s estate. It is not framed, awaiting your choice of presentation. To the verso, thumbnail sketches are drawn in vine charcoal. Huston was revered as both an academician and painter. He was a teacher from 1987 until 2005 and also famously studied under Paul Chidlaw at the Cincinnati Art Academy. The artist’s relationship with his teacher continued far beyond their years at the Art Academy, however. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 69 and is remembered by many as a beloved teacher, artist and friend.
