John Austin Sands Monks Antique Ivory Soap Sheep Etching

An antique drypoint etching depicting a herd of sheep by Illinois artist John Austin Sands Monks (American, 1850-1917). A flock of sheep are depicted in the foreground and farm buildings can be seen standing in the distance. The lines are crisp and detailed in a sepia tone. It has an ‘S’ visual flow and darkens in the distance. It is circa 1880 and is marked in plate with the artist’s signature as well as an Ivory Soap logo. It is under warped glass in a wide fumed tiger oak period frame. Monks is a well noted American artist known for his depictions of sheep. Ready to hang.

Condition

- to fair. The image has some foxing from age, and the frame has light wear and several small scuffs. The backing paper to the verso is tattered and coming apart from the frame.
