Johannes Kip Bookplate Etching of County of Suffolk

Item Details

An antique bookplate etching by Dutch draftsman and engraver Johannes “Jan” Kip (1653-1722), after the view drawn by his business partner Leonard Knyff, titled Brightwel in the County of Suffolk the Seat of the Honorable Sir Barnardiston Barr. The print is plate 52 from Britannia Illustrata: Or Views of Several of the Queens Palaces, as Also of the Principal seats of the Nobility and Gentry of Great Britain, Curiously Engraven on 80 Copper Plates, published in London, 1708-09. The volume is among the most important English topographical publications of the 18th century. Knyff’s name is printed in plate to the lower left, Kip’s name to the lower right. This historical bookplate is mounted behind white mat with hand-painted French matting detail, under glass, in a beveled wood frame with gold tone interior trim.

Condition

- condition consistent with age. Because it is a bookplate, there is a strong crease that runs through the center, top to bottom, with stronger discoloration than throughout the rest of the print. Foxing and rippling throughout print.
