1866 J.H. Colton Map of Alabama
Item Details
An antique 1866 hand-colored engraved map by American pioneer of mapmaking Joseph Hutchins (J.H.) Colton (1800-1893), titled Colton’s Alabama. The map depicts the American state of Alabama with each of its counties delineated, and some highlighted in light pink to distinguish them. A small map key is printed along the map’s right margin. The title and publishing information are printed to the lower right; it was published by Colton’s son, George Woolworth Colton, who continued after his father in the tradition of mapmaking. The print is matted in off-white and presented behind glass in a beveled wooden frame. A wire is attached to the piece’s verso for hanging.
