WWII Hinomaru Yosegaki Japanese "Good Luck" Flag
Item Details
A Hinomaru Yosegaki Japanese ‘good luck’ flag from World War II. This silk flag has been well taken care of and features the red sun in the center, strings on the two right corners, and a red manufacturers stamp in the bottom left corner. Written around the red sun in black ink, an old form of Japanese calligraphy. A rough translation suggests: the bottom characters ‘Place righteousness above family loyalty’, the left characters congratulate the owner of the flag for joining the national guard of Fujinomiya. Fujinomiya is located in Shizuoka, Japan. This flag was most likely given from the leader of a 4th sub-regiment to a man named [Yoshizawa Jiro]. The hinomaru flag is a Japanese tradition that started in the 1860s and extended a few years after WWII. Families, friends, and higher rank military would often write wishes of safety, luck, and victories for the Emperor.
