1853 Edition of "The Pilgrim's Progress" By John Bunyan

An 1853 edition of The Pilgrim’s Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come; Delivered Under the Similitude of a Dream by John Bunyan. This Christian allegorical story was originally published in 1678 after Mr. Bunyan served prison time for preaching against the Church of England. The story centers around a man named Christian and his companions Faithful, Hopeful, and Evangelist. Mr. Bunyan’s allegory is among an elite class of literature that has been translated in over 200 languages and has never been out of print since its first publication 338 years ago. This edition includes thirteen wood-engraved plates in black and white, including an image of the novel’s author opposite the title page. Bound in red with gold gilt spine and covers, gilt-edged page, and gilt figural design and dentelles to the front and back boards. The images to the front and back boards reflect a wood-engraved image within the script, titled Christian and Evangelist. Published by Leary & Getz in Philadelphia in 1853, this edition contains explanatory footnotes within the text, as well as a preface by Reverend Joseph Belcher. This edition also includes ‘The Author’s Apology for His Book’ written by John Bunyan. The story is 270 pages, excluding additional ’Author’s Apology’ and Rev. Belcher’s preface.

Condition

- to poor, the binding shows significant wear to the front board and along the spine, with portions of the publishing cloth missing, torn, and worn, especially along the head and tail caps. The edges of the front and back boards are bent from storage on a shelf and show wear. The pages are spotting browning with age, with discolorations to the wood-engraved plates. Small amount of pencil marking to the front flyleaf. Original owner’s signature and location to the back flyleaf. Personal assessment at preview is advised.
