Original Renoir Etching, "Le Chapeau Epinglé”
Item Details
An original etching by the iconic French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French 1841-1919) titled Le Chapeau Epinglé. Etching is presented on wove paper and signed within the plate to the left. The etching is a portrait of Julie Manet (Berthe Morisot’s daughter and Edouard Manet’s niece) and her cousin Paulette Gobillard. The print was published in Gustave Geffroy’s La Vie artistique 3rd series (Paris, 1894) and in Georges Rivière’s Renoir et ses amis (Paris, 1921).
Softly rendered etching depicts Paulette Gobillard pinning a flower to the straw hat of Julie Manet, who gazes into the distance. Renoir composed this scene as a part of a series: two young children, with one of them pinning a flower to the other’s hat. Julie Manet was a favorite sitter of Renoir, who is known to create these etchings, and other studies of her while he vacationed with Berthe Morisot and her family in Northern France.
Print is matted with archival acid free paper and presented under glass in a traditional brass frame. Please see links for additional artist information.
