Hiroshi Yoshida Vintage Japanese Woodblock "Glittering Sea"

Item Details

An original 1926 Japanese woodblock print by well-listed printmaker Hiroshi Yoshida (Japanese, 1857-1950) (‘Hiroshi’ – generous, ‘Yoshida’ – ‘lucky rice field’) titled Glittering Sea from the artist’s series The Inland Sea. Yoshida is profoundly unique within the tradition of Japanese printmaking, as his wide reception and success enabled him to travel far and wide. He is best-known for his stylized landscapes which frequently strayed from traditional depictions of Japan to picutre the Swiss Alps, Taj Mahal, Grand Canyon, and American national parks. Under a pale sky, Japanese sailboats float effortlessly on rippling waters as the sun reflects bright flickers of light. The print is signed and titled in pencil in the lower margin, and the artist’s chop mark is printed to the lower right. Printer’s marks are visible in the left margin. The print is matted in pale coral and presented behind glass in a black wooden frame.
