A 15-gallon stoneware antique crock with an off white outer salt glaze, dark brown inner salt glaze and stamped with a black "15". Americans began producing salt-glazed stoneware circa 1720, which was valued as not only a durable, decorative household item, but as a safer alternative to other products.
