Paul Chidlaw Abstract Expressionist Impasto Oil Painting

Item Details

An original abstract oil landscape painting on board by well-listed American artist Paul Chidlaw (1900 – 1989), titled, A Song of the Desert. The image is executed with strong intent; heavy applications of muddy pink and murky yellow pigments make room for brilliant, clean blue and orange hues to sparkle. Ambiguous shapes, tones and textures translate into visual expression. The painting is signed in paint to the lower right, “Chidlaw,” mounted in a beveled wood frame with a distressed, speckled silver tone finish. To the verso, the title is marked in Chidlaw’s handwriting, along with the dimensions. Paul Chidlaw was born in Cleves, Ohio and studied at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Fontainebleau, France. He returned to Cincinnati where he then taught at the Art Academy mentoring many students. He was considered a pioneer of the Abstract movement, at the time, and he remains one of Cincinnati’s best-loved native artists. His artwork is displayed in the Cincinnati Art Museum and Xavier University.
