Pair of Isamu Noguchi Akari Paper Light Suspension Sculptures
Item Details
A pair of Isamu Noguchi (American, 1904-1988) Akari paper light suspension sculptures. These hanging lights are constructed out of paper in medium-defying shapes and structures. Modeled after traditional Japanese lanterns, these fluid pieces exemplify the concept of Akari, the Japanese word for ‘light for the sake of illumination’ and the implied space. These original 1950s creations strike a delicate balance between Japanese traditional simplistic handicraft and Mid-Century Modern design. Isamu Noguchi is considered one of the 20th-century’s most renown artists. His artwork spanned a wide range of mediums to include sculpture, gardens, architecture, furniture, lighting design, and ceramics. Notable works include the Japanese Garden at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, Red Cube in New York City, collaborative works with Herman Miller, and many more.
