Queen Size Chinese Canopy Bed, 19th Century

Sleep like an empress or emperor ….. An elaborately carved Chinese wedding bed of substantial size, which interestingly accommodates any contemporary queen size mattress . This one of a kind piece has a parcel gilt canopy and base, with carved panels of stylized naturalistic motifs and dragons, a carved lattice pattern on the interior and a ledge with two drawers on the back.

The bed, composed of two large bases which fit together and more then forty additional pieces. The bed requires skill to assemble and disassemble, but when constructed is solid. Instructions included. Mattress not included.

Installing the Bridal Bed is an important Chinese wedding tradition. On the day before the wedding a ‘good luck woman’ or ‘good luck man’, that is a man or woman with many children and living mates, was selected to install a newly purchased bed. After the bed was in place, children were invited onto the bed as an omen of fertility. The bed was scattered with red dates, oranges, lotus seeds, peanuts, pomegranates and other fruits also as an omen of fertility.

Due to the amount of disassembly required to transport this item, it can be transferred to our Cincinnati Showroom for a $500 fee.
