Semi-Antique Hand-Knotted Sarouk Style Hall Runner
Item Details
A beautiful semi-antique Sarouk style wool hall runner with a cotton warp foundation. It has a nice soft feel and tight pile. The carpet is thick and durable and has a deeply saturated carnelian red ground. The carpet has a central medallion in bright ivory with a center palmette bursting with carnation buds and blossoms in carnelian red, indigo and pale blue. The medallion is surrounded by a lattice pattern of diamonds and dowry chests in cerulean blue, with accents in ivory, olive, pale red, coffee, taupe, and black, accented with palmettes in complementary colors. The spandrels to each corner are a large, bright red carnation bud with foliage on indigo. The carpet has a running water and flower blossom border in the same palette as the field colors on a cochineal red ground. The main border has a deep, rich indigo color with a turtle border, each turtle design being a color from the pattern in the main field, with ivory accents. It has a short, clipped fringe to each end and is unmarked. There is some abrash, the natural and variable effect of the weaver changing dye lots mid-weave. The selvedge edges are bound in bright cochineal red.
Condition
The carpet is in very nice condition and does show some fading and abrash. The once all-over brilliant red and blues have faded in areas.
Dimensions
The carpet measures approximately 10’3" x 3’3".
