Vintage Uranium Glass Inkwell

A vintage uranium glass inkwell, with a hinged lid and a metal rim. Uranium glass was introduced during the 19th century when glass makers experimented with adding uranium to their batches in order to achieve new yellow and green shades. At one point, the uranium was thought to have brought premature death to glass blowers, as many passed early of lung cancer, but time has proven that unlikely, as uranium affects the thyroid gland rather than the lungs.
