Offset Lithographic Print of P.A. Cott's "The Storm"
Item Details
An offset lithographic print of Pierre Auguste Cot’s original painting, The Storm (La Tempête). Cot (French, 1837 – 1883) was noted for his portraiture and romantic figurative work. The Storm was commissioned by a patron important to his career and was painted just three years before his death. In 1874 , he received an award as a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. The painting depicts a young Neoclassical couple dashing down a dark forest trail, glancing behind them at the approaching storm. The meaning of the storm could be interpreted with several meanings. She wears a diaphanous gown and he a loincloth; they hold a cloak above them to protect themselves from the rain. The wind howls around them. The artist’s signature appears in plate to the lower left, and the print is presented double-matted in a flyspecked, gold-toned frame. Ready to hang.
