Marcos Zapata 1740 Oil on Canvas Icon "Immaculate Mother Mary"
Item Details
An original stunning 1740 oil on canvas painting by very well-listed Peruvian Quechua painter of the Cuzco School Marcos Zapata (1710-1773), titled Immaculate Mother Mary. This large icon depicts Mary floating on a cloud. Angels bearing gifts for her surround her on clouds, and the snake that tempts Adam and Eve in the Biblical story of creation descends below her towards Earth. Two saints, who likely represent Peter and Paul, stand below gazing up at her figure. The painting has been coated with a glossy varnish, and areas of shimmering gold paint accent the piece across its surface. The painting has been professionally restored and meticulously cared for. The surface of the painting has not been altered at all in restoration; the painting has been masterfully restretched over a new canvas and stretcher bars. It also seems to have been professionally cleaned. The painting is unsigned. It is also unframed, awaiting your choice of presentation.
Condition
-remarkable for age. Light cracking and very small areas of loss, as expected. Canvas restoration is visible from verso.
