Eugene Tily Mezzotint

Item Details

An antique hand signed mezzotint by Eugene Tily (1870 – 1937), dated 1915. There is limited information to found about this artist, and almost none about this particular mezzotint. The finely printed text above the image reveals that the print was published in London on November 1, 1915, by Henry Graves, popular printseller and publisher in Victorian London, who frequently worked with Tily. This handsome image depicts two woman conversing in an English arched doorway in the midst of a lush countryside. The standing woman holds a rolled bundle of cream colored fabric as the seated woman examines it. A bridled horse awaits to the left; a sweet gray and white cat sits contentedly at the seated woman’s feet on the stone hearth. Signed in pencil by the artist below the image to the right, mounted behind off white hand-painted French matting, under glass, in a decorative wood frame with cast detailing and gilt finish. To the verso, a label reads, ‘Mezzotint – Pair – 1915/ By: Tily/ Balto., MD. (Pri. Estate) 1971.’
