Samuel Chamberlain Drypoint Etching on 18th Century Book Page
Item Details
A vintage original drypoint etching by well listed artist Samuel Chamberlain (Massachusetts, 1895 – 1975), circa 1930. The etching appears to be printed on the blank page of an 18th century French book of Edicts of the King, this particular edict from November of 1754, on hand-laid paper with deckled edges, watermark in tact to the center when held to the light. The image of the etching is incredibly detailed, depicting two men wearing newsboy caps, standing in the sunlight before a dark alley, likely in France; French posters plastering the walls. To the lower left, below plate, the print is marked in pencil as artist’s proof (in French), and edition 1 of 3, in Roman numerals. Artist signature is signed in pencil below plate to the right. Preceding the original text on the opposite page is a stunning image of a throned Superior Being pointing authoritatively to the left, clothed in a billowing cloak and adorned with an all-seeing eye to the breast. To the verso is the conclusion of the Edict. This exceptional conversation piece is professionally mounted between two pieces of clear glass and presented in a rounded wood frame with a natural stained finish.
