Sydney E. Wilson 19th Century Mezzotint "Pinkie"

A vintage color artist’s proof mezzotint by British artist Sydney E. Wilson (1869 – unknown) after the original painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A. (Bristol, London, 1769 – 1830), titled, Pinkie. The image depicts a beautiful young girl wearing a pink satin bonnet and a long white gown tied with a pink sash around her waist. She stands high on a hill that overlooks mountains for miles, underneath a swirling dark sky. Finely printed cursive text at the top of the image reads, ‘Copyright Published July 1, 1927 by Vicars Brothers 12 Old Bond Street London.’ Signed in pencil below image to the right, ‘Sydney E. Wilson.’ This stunning piece is mounted within its original presentation, behind hand-painted French matting, under glass, in an ornate frame with gesso cast applique, crowned in a floral tied bouquet, with a distressed gold tone finish. A label to the verso contains handwritten text with information about the artwork.
Condition
- condition consistent with age. Print is in good condition, with light foxing and discoloration around outer edges, near mat. French matting is considerably discolored and afflicted with foxing throughout, notably along bottom. Applique of frame is chipped on top center and on bottom center to the left.
