Mottahedeh "Chelsea Botanicals" Porcelain Tableware

Item Details

A set of Mottahedeh Vista Alegre Portugal Chelsea Botanicals tableware. These lovely pieces are decorated with vibrant hued botanical transfer illustrations taken from famous botanical illustrations made at the Chelsea factory in 18th century England. The original paintings were of newly arrived Chinese plants in the Chelsea Physic Garden (second oldest botanical garden in England, founded 1621). These pieces were commissioned by Sir Hans Sloane, physician to King George III. The pieces include three 3-pc luncheon sets representing a different botanical; a teacup, saucer and plate. The pieces were distributed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The pieces are marked to the undersides.
