17th Century Oil on Canvas of Soldiers
Item Details
An 17th century unframed oil on canvas painting, probably Italian, in the manner of Caravaggio. This dark image depicts five figures huddled together in a small room. Three of the figures are wearing armor. A central figure sits in front of the others, with his head in his hands, possibly a captive. No signature is visible, though it is possible it was visible at one time and has since worn away; most of the paint in the lower corners has been lost. The canvas has been restretched over similarly aged canvas, and affixed with a clear waxy varnish or sealant on the verso.
Condition
-painting is very dark and needs to be cleaned. Cracking and accretion across. Areas of loss across the painting, particularly in lower corners and along all edges.
