Authentic British Royal Household Cavalry Life Guard Helmet

Item Details

An authentic British Royal Household Life Guard Helmet. Worn by the Household Mounted Cavalry Regiment at Buckingham Palace, one of the two most senior regiments of the British Army. This regiment is considered the most prestigious as its soldiers are the Queen’s Royal Body Guards and Royal Escorts. The helmet is polished steel and brass and is sometimes referred to as the ‘Albert’ helmet, as this style was introduced under the reign of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The helmet has a white horsehair plume affixed to a nine inch metal rod at the top of the helmet, attached through an eight-pointed star. To the front of the helmet is an eight-pointed gilt star badge with a center cross and the words, ‘Honi Soit Qui Mal y Pense,’ or, ‘Evil to those who evil thinks.’ The badge is surrounded by an oak and laurel garland in brass. From the base of the plume, an affixed brass chain goes down the center of the back of the helmet. The helmet has Tudor Rose ear bosses attached to the ‘chin chin’ chin strap, which is leather lined and decorated with a brass chain. It has a leather liner with an adjustable tie system, as the helmets are only made in one size and are adjusted by means of the liner. It is marked inside, ‘Helmet Metal Household Cavalry, Officer /WOS ORs Size 58cm, Firmin & Sons PLC.’ Firmin & Sons is one of the five hundred oldest companies in the world, having been established in approximately 1655.
