19th Century Meiji Era Japanese Sashiko Fireman's Coat

Item Details

An incredible and scarce late 19th century Meiji Era Japanese haten fireman’s coat in a very thick and heavy Sashiko- stitched cotton. The coat is in a blue, red, and grey color block to the front and back, grey asian characters decorate the lapels of the coat and a large asian character in a red circle decorates the back. These heavy coats would have been doused in water, allowing the firemen to work closer to the flames.

Condition

- Wear typical with age, mostly in the form of pigment fading, seen to the seams, especially around shoulders.
