Jefferson Davis Grass Garland in Gutta Percha Case

A circa 1866 grass garland framed in a gutta percha case by Confederate State President Jefferson Davis (1808-1889) during his imprisonment at Fort Monroe. Davis was imprisoned between 1865-1867 at Fort Monroe, as a suspect for the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The case is comprised of black gutta percha with a hinged lid and interior lined in velvet with a gold tone metal glass plated frame. Inside are the dried grass garland with the hand written note ‘Grass garland by Jefferson Davis at Fort Monroe July 4th 1866’.
